Dr Beverly Anne Brand “has a long history in health administration, but runs an alternative health clinic on the side that offers ‘reiki, crystals, sound, colour, theta healing and aura-soma'”.
Health Minister Michael Ferguson in a statement, said Dr Brand has a “highly successful record as a health administrator”.
While I am pleased the minister has looked into the capability of the appointee, the message is clear: alternative therapies have an equal footing with medicine proven to work. It seems the ministry is giving tacit endorsement.
The two streams are incompatible. Is the ministry endorsing unproven alternative treatments or is Brand misleading people in her practice, selling treatments that don’t work?
